Why I'm Always Looking for Better Ways to Photograph Properties
One of the things I enjoy most about photography is that there is always something new to learn.
Whether it's improving camera techniques, refining editing workflows or exploring new approaches to lighting, I firmly believe that professional development should never stop. The moment we stop learning is often the moment we stop improving.
Over the past few years, property photography has become an increasingly important part of my work. Alongside photographing schools, businesses and events, I have had the opportunity to photograph a growing number of homes, commercial spaces and Airbnb properties across Warwickshire and beyond.
As my experience has grown, so too has my desire to improve the quality of the images I deliver to clients.
Good Enough Is Never Really Good Enough
When I first started photographing properties, I relied primarily on HDR photography.
HDR, which stands for High Dynamic Range, involves taking multiple photographs at different exposure levels and blending them together. This helps retain detail in both bright windows and darker areas of a room.
The results were good. In many cases, they were significantly better than standard single-image photography.
However, the more properties I photographed, the more I began to notice areas where I felt improvements could be made.
Sometimes colours were not quite as natural as they appeared in real life. Certain rooms lacked the depth and atmosphere I could see with my own eyes. While the images were technically strong, I felt there was still room to improve.
Learning From Other Professionals
One of the advantages of working in photography is the ability to learn from talented photographers around the world.
Through ongoing training, research and experimentation, I began exploring a technique known as flambient photography. While the name may sound complicated, the principle is actually quite straightforward.
Rather than relying solely on HDR, flambient photography combines the natural light already present within a room with carefully controlled additional lighting.
The goal is not to make a room look artificially bright. The goal is to make it look natural.
Combining Natural Light With Controlled Lighting
Today, my approach often combines both HDR and flambient techniques.
I still use bracketed exposures to capture the way natural light falls across a room and to retain detail throughout the image. However, I also introduce carefully controlled lighting using my Godox AD300 flash paired with a large Neewer lantern softbox.
The lantern diffuser produces a soft, natural-looking light that fills shadows without creating harsh highlights or obvious flash effects.
This combination allows me to achieve several important things:
• More accurate colours
• Cleaner white walls and ceilings
• Better control of shadows
• Natural-looking window detail
• A brighter but realistic feel
• Greater consistency throughout the property
Most importantly, it helps create images that feel closer to how the property actually looks and feels in person.
Why This Matters to Property Owners
The vast majority of people viewing property photographs will never know whether an image was created using HDR, flambient techniques or something else entirely.
What they will notice is how the image makes them feel.
Does the room feel bright?
Does it feel welcoming?
Can they clearly see the space?
Can they imagine themselves living there?
Ultimately, those are the things that matter most.
Every improvement I make to my process is designed to help answer those questions more effectively.
Continual Improvement Benefits My Clients
My background in education taught me the importance of continual professional development. As a teacher and later a headteacher, there was always an expectation that we would continue learning and refining our practice.
Photography is no different.
I am constantly looking for ways to improve my workflow, develop new skills and deliver even stronger results for my clients. Whether that involves new equipment, better techniques or more effective editing processes, the goal remains the same.
To create the highest quality property photography possible.
