Finding Creativity Again: A Day with the Camera at West Midlands Safari Park
As photographers, a great deal of our time is spent working to a purpose. Whether it is creating staff portraits, documenting school life, capturing a business in action, or telling the story of a wedding day, there is always a brief, a schedule and an outcome in mind. It is work I genuinely enjoy, but it means that the camera can easily become something functional rather than something freeing.
Last week during half term, I made a point of stepping back from that rhythm and spent a day at West Midlands Safari Park with my family and my camera. No brief. No deadline. No expectations. Just the chance to look and have fun.
What stood out immediately was the simple act of slowing down. Watching the way the animals moved, held themselves, or met your gaze reminded me of the beauty and quiet power that exists when you really take the time to observe. Close-up photography encouraged me to pay attention to detail: the texture of fur, the patterns of markings, the depth of colour in an eye. There is a real sense of majesty in being close to animals that carry such presence, strength and personality.
These are the kinds of moments that first drew me towards photography years ago. The opportunity to notice things that are often overlooked, and to connect with the subject in front of the lens without forcing a result. It is a reminder that photography is not only about documentation or presentation. It is, at its core, about seeing.
Returning to work after experiences like this has a noticeable impact. I feel more grounded when directing a portrait, more patient when photographing a busy classroom, and more attuned to the small, significant details that tell a story in a business or school environment. Time spent creating purely for enjoyment feeds back into professional work in a quiet but meaningful way.
Photography is at its strongest when it comes from a place of curiosity rather than pressure. This week was a reminder to keep making time for that.
