Conservation Photography - Education & Outreach

My background as a qualified teacher plays a central role in my conservation work. Before running Biopic Photography full time, I spent many years teaching and leading in schools, which means I am used to turning complex ideas into something clear, engaging and accessible.

The aim of this part of my work is simple: to help schools, community groups and the public connect more closely with the nature on their doorstep. Whether that is through photography, short films, guided sessions or learning materials, everything is built around real local stories from Warwickshire and the Midlands.

What I Offer:

  • School resources and lesson material

I create visual resources that help teachers bring local wildlife, habitats and conservation work into the classroom. These can be tailored to your curriculum needs and can include:

    - photo-led fact sheets

    - simple habitat explainers

    - life cycle sequences

    - local species spotter guides

    - visual case studies of rivers, canals and wetlands

    - presentation-ready content for assemblies or class sessions

All resources are based on real images and field notes from my projects.

  • Workshops and school visits

I run in-school sessions where pupils can learn about:

    - local wildlife and habitats

    - how rivers, ponds and canals support biodiversity

    - the challenges facing species in towns and farmland

    - how conservation groups work

    - simple techniques for nature photography

Workshops can be hands-on, discussion-based or linked to specific topics such as food chains, adaptation or seasonal change.

  • Outdoor learning and guided walks

For classes or youth groups wanting to explore outdoor spaces, I offer guided sessions at local sites such as rivers, woodland edges, canal towpaths or nature reserves. These sessions help students:

    - identify species

    - understand habitat links

    - observe behaviour

    - explore the impact of seasonality

    - learn how humans influence ecosystems

I design these visits so pupils come away with a sense of curiosity rather than a list of facts.

  • Talks for community groups

I deliver talks for adult groups, societies and community organisations, covering topics such as:

    - the state of local wildlife

    - the stories behind my conservation projects

    - how photography supports conservation

    - river health and freshwater ecology

    - urban wildlife and green corridors

These talks work well for WI groups, photography clubs, nature societies, youth groups and local interest groups.

  • Visual material for visitor centres and outreach teams

Conservation organisations often need clear images and simple explanations for interpretation boards, displays or public engagement events. I can provide:

    - photo sets for displays

    - short explainer videos

    - simple diagrams and labelled images

    - content linked directly to your site or project

This is particularly useful for reserves, visitor centres and council-led green initiatives.

Why use a teacher-photographer?

My teaching experience means I plan every education or outreach piece with:

  • clarity

  • age-appropriate language

  • curriculum links

  • accurate science

  • and a sense of narrative

Combined with field experience and biology training, this lets me support schools and groups in a way that goes beyond photography alone.
